How Does SR Transfer Compare to Acronis When Upgrading to a Smaller SSD Drive?

True Image HD

Launching the Software

This version of Acronis True Image HD requires rebooting and running from a CD.

Warning: You may need to select to start your PC from the CD drive in your BIOS boot menu. If you have a mini-PC that does not contain a CD-ROM drive, then you will need to copy the contents of the CD to a bootable flash drive.

Double-click on Setup from your download or software CD.

Because System Reflection runs from within Windows, you will be able to continue using your PC while the transfers process runs.

Selecting the Source & Target Drives

Under normal circumstances, the source drive is pre-selected in the Acronis drive selection window.

Click Next to continue.

Warning: If you add data to the SSD drive prior to performing the transfer, then you will need to select both the source and target drives separately. Selecting the wrong source drive can result in your entire system being wiped out.

In the System Reflection drive selection window, the source drive is always pre-selected.

Click Next to continue.

Excluding Data When Migrating to a Smaller SSD Drive

When selecting data to exclude, Acronis True Image will allow access to everything on the source drive, including the boot information required to start your PC, and the Windows folder.

Folders and files available for selection do NOT display their sizes, so  you will need to use trial and error to determine how much to exclude before the transfer process can continue.

Warning: Take care to NOT select certain items on your source drive that are required by your Windows operating system. Selecting to exclude the Windows folder, or the special partition required for starting your PC will cause the transfer process to fail.

Warning: Take care to NOT select any of the folders or files within the Program Files or ProgramData folders for exclusion. Selecting any of these items will result in the applications on your PC not running properly from your new SSD drive.

As you select items to exclude, you will encounter delays before the exclusion totals are displayed:

These delays can last anywhere from 1 to 2 minutes.

Acronis True Image allows you to select wild cards for the exclusion process. Even though there is no example given, it can be assumed that wild cards are entered in DOS *.* form:

Warning: Wild card exclusions are applied on the entire drive, so entering the standard exclusions most users will want, such as extensions for picture files and music, will also be excluded from application folders. This may cause some of your applications to run differently, or fail all together.

When enough data has been selected for exclusion, then click the Next button to continue.

System Reflection's Boot Guard Technology ensures that your SSD drive will always be bootable, regardless of the folders and files you select for exclusion. This means that items such as the Windows folder or the special files required by your PC to start and run are not available for exclusion. You also can not exclude items related to your applications, ensuring that they will all run properly when you start using your new SSD drive.

System Reflection displays the Items available for exclusion in an intuitive user interface:

System Reflection informs you at all times how much data you have selected to exclude, and how much more is needed to be excluded before the transfer process can start. There are no delays associated with this process:

It might be possible to only exclude temp folders and the recycle bin to make the transfer fit. System Reflection will identify numerous temporary folders and files and make them easy to select for exclusion. You can also exclude your Windows Libraries. Excluding your Downloads folder or all your videos is done with a single click:

Click the Advanced Folder & File Selection button for more advanced exclusion options. From this window, individual files as well as folders can be selected. Notice that folder and file sizes are always displayed:

When enough data has been selected for exclusion, then click the Next button to continue.

Summary Display Prior to Launching the Transfer

In the summary for Acronis True Image, both the source and target drives are displayed with their logical disk numbers:

Warning: When running from a CD, disk numbers may be assigned differently for the source and target drives. It might be best to verify which drive is selected as the target. Selecting the wrong drive can result in your entire system being wiped out.

Click Next to continue.

System Reflection will always inform you which drive you have selected to migrate to prior to launching the transfer. This includes the drive model, capacity, used space, and any drive letters currently assigned to the SSD drive.

Click Next to continue.

Transfer Complete Display

When the transfer process completes for Acronis True Image, the software will let you know it has finished by displaying the following message:

After clicking OK, you can shutdown and replace your old hard drive with your new SSD drive.

When the transfer process completes, System Reflection will inform you how much data was transferred to your SSD drive, including the number of folders and files, and their sizes in bytes. The completion screen also includes how long the transfer process took, and what the transfer rate was:

After clicking Exit, you can shutdown and replace your old hard drive with your new SSD drive.
